Wow Druid Spells - Roots

The Entangling Roots spell is the first spell of its type that a young Druid in the World of Warcraft gets in his spell book. This type of spell is commonly called a crowd control spell (CC) and is used to stop a monster or enemy player in its tracks. On top of immobilizing someone, or something, there is also a damage over time (DoT) aspect to the spell as well. Once an enemy is caught in the Entangling Roots spell they are held still for 12 to 27 seconds depending on your level and take damage over that entire time.

Like most everything else in the game Roots is not a sure thing. There is always a chance that the enemy will break roots before the entire time is up. When an enemy who is rooted is struck by melee, ranged or spell damage there is a chance that the spell will break. There is also a random chance of the spell breaking as well. This is something to pay attention to as you don't want to root something and then head off to the bathroom as you may come back to a pathetic little corpse! Its a great spell but you cant always count on it holding.

Instant Grasp is simply a variation on the method of casting the Entangling Roots spell. Where the standard spell has a cast time of 1.5 seconds and is cast on an opponent Instant Grasp is, as the name implies, an instant cast spell that can be cast on the run. Instant Grasp is actually cast on yourself as opposed to an enemy. Once this spell is active any creature that hits you within 45 seconds will be rooted! This makes is super handy for running out of those tight spots. If you get in trouble and are running your little Druid butt out of a bad situation with a bad guy hitting you from behind pop Instant Grasp and your attacker will be rooted, allowing you to shamefully run away crying in peace. Remember that this spell can be cast in your animal forms!

The Root spell is very handy and you'll find many uses for it as you level up. A few examples...

If you are taking a lot of damage in a fight simply root your enemy, step back and heal yourself, re-buff and eat or drink.

When in a fight against one monster and another joins in (called an add) you'll want to root the second guy so you can finish off the first bad guy.

When up against a very strong opponent you may want to cook him for a bit. To cook a monster (mob) you will cast one or several DoTs on him, for example Moonfire and Insect Swarm, and then root him. The mob will be stuck there for a while as his health slowly leaks away. This is often combined with you healing yourself at the same time...multitasking!

When in a group you may root a mob that is attacking your party's healer or other weaker member so they can get away from him.

As you can image there are tons of good uses for this spell. Just keep in mind that with great rooting power comes great responsibility. In a group situation, especially at low levels, it is assumed that the Druid will be in charge of CC so be ready for it!

When you decide to invest heavily in the Balance Talent Tree of the Druid class you will be rewarded with a mean, lean, offensive, damage dealing, high DPS spell casting machine. With more and more decent gear showing up to augment this build the Balance Druid has really come into its own, especially in the post Wrath of the Lich King environment. At higher levels a Druid of this persuasion is a powerful force and a heck of a lot of fun to play.

While the Balance Tree is very rewarding at higher levels it can be a very frustrating and difficult at the lower levels. As Druids we are only able to wear cloth and leather gear so our damage mitigation is not all that great. Once we get the Bear form at level 10 there is at least some sort of help however, of course, we cant cast spells in Bear form. The main issue and complaint many Druids have at lower levels is the squishiness factor. Low amour, low hit points and limited spells makes the first 10 levels tough. Come to think of it the next 20 or 30 arent that easy either.

For the above reason most Druids will go the way of a Feral build for leveling up. Its faster, easier, and for some more fun. Often these same folks will switch over to a Balance intensive build at higher levels. While there is nothing wrong with this I'd argue that leveling the whole way as a Balance makes you a better player of that build. When you progress through many levels fearing for your life as a squishy finger wiggler youll gain a healthy respect for adds and aggro distances. On top of that the repetitive need to perfect the exact timing of offensive, defensive, healing and area of effect (AOE) spells is critical for future Druid play.

The jewel of the Balance Tree is without a doubt the Moonkin Ability. It takes at least 31 points invested to obtain this new and exclusive ability. There are two major benefits to this form the first of which is a massive armor boost. Finally we have the dream of a heavily armored spell castor! Secondly this form is a big benefit to groups as there is a healthy critical chance boost to all party members around you. So you get tougher and those around you hit harder. A bonus benefit of this form is the form itself. We get to turn into a huge, powerful Bigfoot with a beak and deadlocks that can perform what is hands down the best dance in the entire game. And when it gets right down to it the dancing is the most important part of WoW.

Among all the damage boosting talents youll have a chance to choose from there are two I find as absolute must haves. First of all is the boring looking Natures Reach. With 2 points in this talent all your Balance spells, as well as Faerie Fire, have their reach extended by 20% and your Balance spells produce 30% less threat than normal. This is huge! The extended reach allows you to stand and cast for longer periods of time and helps to eliminate a lot of running around and spamming Moonfire. The second must have is Improved Moonkin Form. You get a nice damage boost equal up to 15% of your Spirit and your group members gain up to 3% haste from you. In this cast youre hitting harder and those around you are hitting faster. You cant miss!

All in all the Balance Druid in the World of Warcraft is a powerful character capable of taking on pretty much any situation. Great in groups and still able to fill the role of healer and tank in a pinch look to a Moonkin for some massive offensive spell damage. Thanks!

Wow Druid Spells - Barkskin

Upon reaching level 44 Druida are awarded the spell Barkskin and very often this spell gets ignored. Its not very flashy or sexy, many WoW Druids really are not aware of what it does and its quickly forgotten. The thing is this spell can be one of the best defensive spells you have when you know what it is and what it can do for you!

Barkskin is an instant cast spell, its last for 12 seconds with a 60 second cool down and can only be self cast. This spell can be used in any Druid form there is (that means caster or humanoid, bear, Dire bear, car, travel, aquatic, flight, epic flight, Tree of Life, Moonkin all the forms!) and the effects will be the same no matter the form you happen to be in at the time. The mana cost is minimal and the benefits are huge.

Make it a habit to keep Barkskin close at hand when running in combat as it will help you make it through the fight! There are many benefits to this spell that some may not realize or have simply forgotten. The first and most obvious effect is there is a damage reduction of 20% for the duration of the spell. Did you get that? For 12 seconds all the damage that is thrown at you is reduced by 20%. This is huge! This is a serious buff that comes in handy when things start to get hairy.

The second benefit of this spell is as helpful, if not more so, as the damage reduction. When Barksin is in effect the Druids spell casting will not be interrupted when he receives damage. This is a huge help when casting those longer and more mana intensive spells in our books or for spells that require the Druid to channel for the duration. A good example is when you're casting a Hurricane spell. Its very easy to attract attention when casting that spell (it might be the big black clouds and the lightning flashes) that results in you taking damage and therefore breaking the spell cast. Throw on Barkskin and you'll be able to cast the whole spell duration even with a pet chewing on you and a Mage throwing fireballs in your face. Another good example is when you simply have to get that healing spell off (say Tranquility or Healing Touch). Cast Barkskin first and make sure you can get that spell off!

The third benefit to Barkskin is the ability to cast this spell in all sorts of different states. As Druids we tend to be the target of a variety of crowd control measures. Do not forget you can cast Barkskin when you are stunned, asleep, feared, frozen, trapped, getting hit in the head with a brick or otherwise incapacitated. Keep this in mind the next time that Rogue comes up behind you, stun locks you and starts going to town. Pop that Barkskin spell!

The fourth benefit of this great little Druid spell only applies if you have at least one point in the Brambles talent on the Balance Tree. With the Brambles talent, Barkskin has a 5%, 10% or 15% (depending if you have 1, 2 or 3 points in the talent) chance of dazing an attacker on the hit. This is super handy, especially against Rogues in PvP and Arena play. I hope this article gives you reason to revisit the Druids Barkskin spell and hopefully make more and better use of it.
